Why read every day?

Continued reading development and practice, at the junior level (grades 4, 5, & 6), sets the stage for strong readers and hopefully a life-long love of reading. For this reason, one of the main requirements for homework in our class is reading a minimum of 40 minutes per night. Students will keep track of this reading for the 5 school days each week, though I strongly encourage reading EVERY night before bed. Establishing a daily routine is the easiest way to keep it up. Students will bring home a weekly reading log with their agenda and will fill it out each night. Parents are asked to approve and sign this log at the end of each week. I will check the logs every Monday.
