School Closure

The Ontario government has required that our school be closed for the two weeks following March Break as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of COVID 19. No school work has been assigned for the week of March Break. However, after that, I will be in touch with my Grade 6 students via their board emails to assign work. Student access to a computer will be very beneficial as I will communicating digitally throughout the closure.

Students currently have stapled Fractions worksheets in their BEE Bags that should already be complete. If yours (your child's) isn't finished, please complete it ASAP.

On Friday, I sent home the following:

* English Journal workbook

* Book Report template

* Spiral Math duotang

* EQAO preparation booklet

* Confirmation workbook

If you were away on Friday, I would expect that you use lined paper at home and online Google docs to complete required work.

There has been no word on whether the Ontario government will move forward with EQAO testing this year, so we will work on the EQAO preparation booklet as usual. Regardless of the test, the questions are on the Grade 6 curriculum, so the practice will still be beneficial.

Weekly work on Spiral Math and 30 minutes of reading per day will continue to be the expectation throughout Grade 6.

A trip to the public library today would be a good idea if that is possible. My understanding is that Ottawa Public Libraries will close on Monday (tomorrow). Online library resources and ebooks are still an option, of course.

I would strongly suggest establishing a quite, organized place to work at home, for a scheduled part of each day, to maintain routine and continuity. This will allow us to progress appropriately through the Grade 6 curriculum in the required academic year. This is important for you to be prepare for Grade 7. There currently has been no announcement by the government to extend this academic year into the summer, so we will move forward normally, with the expectation to finish by the end of June.

Not to worry. We will manage.
